I fought the law and I won

This is what I think happened:
A fat, old and extremely disagreeable traffic policeman saw us talking in a strange language and carrying a guidebook and decided to earn a little extra income. Either that, or he was a nudnik.
So I'm walking down the street in a run down part of Tel Aviv's schmatte district, when I hear a commotion behind me and lo, there's this schmendrik screaming at me, demanding we show him our identification cards. I say we have none. I wanted to say we're tourists, but I said we are exploring.
"So what if you are exploring? Show me ID!"
I show him my US driver's license. Still he wants ID and gives no explanation whatever for is he hollering like a maniac.
Finally, he claims we crossed the street on a pedestrian red light. For a moment I thought,
there we go to the police station, kosher midnight express, so I apologized for crossing, admitted I didn't realize, even though the Magnificent Arepa assured me and him that we did not cross in anything but green. I said I'm from New York. So he tries to be clever and asks whether in NY people are allowed to cross on a red light.
If no cars are coming and it is safe to do so, of course.
I'm not so sure, he says.
I'm very sure, I say.
I think he was a little surprised to hear what he thought to be an idiot tourist talk back at him in the same screaming Israeli fashion everybody else employs, so he had no choice but to give me back the license.
To the great amusement of some bystanders.

kemudian saya coba mengakses domain saya tanpa www ,saya heran kok malah di bawa ke situs lain walaupun memang disitu ada anjuran untuk menuju ke www.poetra-anoegrah.co.cc tapi kalau pengunjung blog tidak tahu gimana , sama juga bohong dong !

Bingung harus gimana dan untung saya menemukan blognya mas doyok yang bisa menjawab semua impian saya ( hehehe )

Just like Grandma's

Eating in Israel is like eating at your grandma's; they're afraid you won't get enough food.
The bread is plentiful and magnificent and portions are huge. So far, service in nice establishments is remarkably charming and the prices are equivalent to NY.
But where in NY will anyone give you a humongous and delicious millefuille for free?
Today I had the most memorable meal of the trip at Dr. Shakshuka in Yaffo. I had the assortment of Tripolitan salads, one with more concentrated exploding flavors than the other, and the complete couscous, which came with a veal shank that fell off the bone and a potato stuffed with meat. It tasted like someone's grandma spent four years in the kitchen making it. It feels like I ate a plutonium bomb. Amazing.
As is my custom, I will probably have to pay excess weight when I get back.

gathers the information from quilt documentation days and interviews held in 2007 and 2008.

In the best tradition of using material culture (surviving objects) to help us understand our history, Connie uses the quilts to tell the story of the people, the economics, the geography and the cultures of the area. We learn about the quilts but we also learn about living in a rural community through hard times and good. We hear about a woman who kept a bullsnake in the kitchen as the solution to her mouse problem, immigrants who came to Farmington by driving their wagon along the frozen river and many women whose grandchildren recall them as "Hard workers."

Saturday July 3rd Connie will be signing books at Farmington's  E3 Children’s Museum & Science Center from 11 to 1 during the Ice Cream Social.  Sounds like a perfect day to visit Farmington.

Ranbir Kapoor New Pictures 2010

It was an unintentional blow but a blow it was when Ranbir Kapoor hit right on Katrina Kaif’s nose leaving the delicate lady bleeding. It all happened on the sets of the Rajkumar Santoshi film ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’.

This Monday evening, the stars of the film were shooting a chase sequence at an elaborate set created at Madh Island. Ranbir and Katrina were supposed to be running away from some goons and when Ranbir needed to suddenly turn around during the shoot, his hand inadvertently hit Katrina on her face and the delicate actress was left with a bleeding nose.

According to reports, Ranbir immediately apologized to the actress, but she took no offence because she knew the blow wasn’t intended. However, Katrina was in pain and had to be given first-aid on the sets. A worried Santoshi called off shooting for the day. The next day, too, Santoshi did not shoot the film but used the free time to do some decoration on the sets.

Well, all Ranbir is doing at present is keeping his fingers crossed so the Sallu Bhai (who is just too possessive about his girlfriend) does not take it as an intentional offence!

Rakhi Sawant New Pictures 2010 No Nip Slip

Sawant was born as Neeru Bheda to Jaya Bheda , who married Sawant, a Police Constable at Worli Police Station and named her children Sawant.[4] Sawant attended Goklibai High School in the Vile Parle suburb of Mumbai and later studied at Mithibai College. She is the sister of film director Rakesh Sawant and former actress Usha Sawant.[5]

While still in high school, Sawant was offered a small dancing part in the film Joru Ka Ghulam. Tel Aviv is fabulous, but would it kill them to keep it in shape? It's so dilapidated in places, it looks like a cross between Old Havana (before the paint job) and Beirut (after the shelling). There are zillions of amazing Bauhaus buildings, but few have been spiffed up, despite the UNESCO landmarking. The parks are in bad shape and there is a lot of garbage, which not even the batallions of cute feral cats can keep in control. This may be the only city on Earth where the most expensive luxury boutiques surround a plaza that looks like a stampede of buffalo just ran past it, but that is part of its charm. Tel Avivians may not have either the time, the inclination or the cheap labor to tend to their gardens and paint their buildings. But don't they have a mayor?

Flying Israir to Tel Aviv, the head steward was a cross between a stand up comedian and a poet. In Hebrew, he was hilarious. In English he stuck to the airline script.  Some samples:

He got an ovation and gave us all his email address over the PA system.

Clues in an Old Pattern

Continuing comments on the old star quilt shown in my last post:

This early quilt, which may date from 1820-1860, features interesting patchwork. The pattern is all in the sashing. The blocks are plain white, the perfect spot to show off some fancy quilted wreaths.

It's in my Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns (#1059) but I didn't find this pattern in any publication until 1973 when Lenice Ingram Bacon showed an antique quilt she'd purchased in Tennessee. She called it Darting Minnows. In her book American Patchwork Quilts she pictured a detail of the same design in plain red and plain white set on the diagonal.

I once owned a similar quilt in a single indigo print and plain white (a hard combination to date.) I'd guess it was first half of the 19th century. Mine had a square inside the cornerstone square. Robert Bishop in one of his books on antique quilts showed another indigo and white version set on the diagonal and called it Eight-Pointed Star---a good generic name. Bishop's version was "late 19th century."

The variations of these "Sash and Block" designs with an unpieced block were a folk pattern handed around from quilter to quilter. Nineteenth-century periodicals and pattern designers didn't publish or name them probably because the construction would be hard to show in the little black and white square diagrams the magazines used to communicate about patterns.

In the turn-of-the-last century magazines and catalogs I did find a similar pattern with shorter star points. About 1900 the Ladies' Art Company catalog sold a pattern for the quilt below named Vestibule. In 1914 the Household Journal published it as Morning Star.

Here's a detail of the original top that Bobbi copied faithfully. I'd guess the maker saw it in the Household Journal as she colored it just as it was shown.


I love this pattern and have made it up in several of my Moda fabric collections. Here's a mock-up of the quilt in the newest line Arnold's Attic, which reproduces fabrics from about 1900, the decades of the top above. Arnold's Attic is scheduled for August delivery. The unpieced squares are cut 4-1/2" so it's a great design for a Charm pack plus.

Setelah bertanya-tanya .. ternyata memang di daerah situ disediakan fasilitas jaringan internet oleh pemerintah kota solo yang di dukung oleh PT XL Axiata Tbk bahkan bukan cuma itu ada juga perpustakaan , area bermain juga panggung untuk pentas seni dan budaya yang bisa di manfaatkan secara cuma-cuna alias gratis ..
Memang waktu itu sempat denger rencana pemerintah kota solo untuk menjadikan kota solo sebagai kota layak anak ( KLA ) dan dinamakan Taman Cerdas yang di sebar di berbagai daerah yaitu Sumber, Gandekan, Joyotakan, Pajang, mojo songo dan Kadipiro
Sasaran pengguna Taman Cerdas itu adalah anak-anak kalangan masyarakat menengah ke bawah.

Walaupun begitu tapi kalau ada fasilitas gratisan nya langsung serbu aja deh ..

Asyik juga ya kota solo ..

Yesterday a friend blew me away with an OLD quilt she recently got from her sister. There is NO history - only that her sister's Mother-in-law was an antique dealer (many years ago). Seeing and touching quilts like these always makes me hold my breath while I try to absorb as much of it as I can. And I ALWAYS wish the maker had signed and dated her work. I got my camera for some really quick pictures.

Becky's got a good eye. Several clues made her think this quilt was really old. (In the quilt business I guess we say anything older than 1840 is REALLY OLD.) One clue to a pre-1860 quilt is the fringed edge. In my book Clues in the Calico I said this on page 121:

Fringe is another early edge treatment and one that correlates well with a specific period of time. Of 20 fringed quilts in the database [of 1000 date-inscribed quilts] 19 were dated 1860 or earlier, indicating that fringe (especially a white fringe----knitted, knotted, woven or crocheted) is a strong clue to a pre-Civil War quilt.

The fabric doesn't give us much information. Plain white cotton offers no clues. The blue print with the white floral sprig could be an indigo print, a dye used over such a long time period that it offers no clues. But the blue and buff stripe is helpful. It may be colored with the Prussian blue dye process developed about 1815. Buff and blue prints were quite popular in the 1840s and 1850s in the U.S. but they were available earlier.

When we are dating old quilts we use comparative dating, that is we compare the fabric in question to similar fabrics we have seen before. The blue strip is so unusual I have very few similar fabrics in my memory bank.

The quilting pattern doesn't offer too many clues. Double lines in a grid as in the blue floral are indicative of the 19th century, but we knew that any way. The closeness of the parallel lines in the striped border is a weak clue to the 19th century too. 20th-century quilters tended to use wider spaces between their lines.

Using the Prussian blue/buff stripe, the heavy quilting and the fringe as our best evidence, I would guess 1820 as an early date and 1860 as the latest date.

It may be older and date to about 1800-1860.  I wish I had more examples of that blue and buff print for comparison.

Marchesa Resort2011: Thanksgiving in June?

Well, Resort2011 for Marchesa might as well be the trotting of the turkeys. Spain has the running of the bulls, New York has wild turkeys; marauding, unabashed and untamed turkeys. I've always thought Marchesa had the glamor game down. That was probably because I tended to see that collection from the corner of my eye. When I turned to focus, looking straight at it, I was as disturbed by it as I am by the rampaging foul that has come close to out numbering the pilgrims who come to East Hampton and neighboring hamlets to worship. Sounds harsh, I know, but this collection was one gigantic , queeny mess. Nothing about it said Resort other than the program.

From the top, I was reminded that Georgina Chapman is the child bride of Harvey Weinstein, of movie mogul fame, not to mention the savior of Halston and it's Bad Seed little sister, Halston Legacy. The first looks were straight off the back lot. Cleopatra and Mata Hari along with a chorus line of showgirls in costumes parading as chic dresses and gowns. Had those creations been viewed from a safe distance , they'd have exuded the hauteur and command of an Adrian, Edith Head, perhaps a Poiret if the lighting was just so and in concert with a very effective fog machine. Marchesa has been so successful on the red carpet with so many important actresses of late, I was frankly disappointed to see such pedestrian clothes.

The first exit is a turquoise gown suitable for Cleopatra entertaining on the Nile. It approaches suitability for entering the gates of Rome but is a little short on gold. The collar piece is all chunky turquoise stones and other bits of this and that with a draped column that reads more as an afterthought. I almost thought they'd rather have shown Miss Cleo in only a jeweled collar, cuffs, a bad wig and naked. It was the damn censors who insisted they switch the asp for a gown. Another variation on that overwrought theme appears later in white, which was more effective, as the jeweled collar is obscured by a swath of silk chiffon looping through it and concealing the better or worse part of it, depending on your taste. A lovely confection comes after in russet orange layers of satin faced organza. It's one dress along with a few more that look somewhat current. Another was a beautifully draped short printed strapless with only a scattering of jet crystals. It was pure dressmaking beauty with subtlety as its primary detail. A claret silk chiffon gown was also effective with masterful workmanship and a modicum of sparkle; a very chic Mother of the Bride. With headpieces like snoods, it often looked like Harvey gave the team the keys to the Costume archives of RKO and let them loose. There was nothing original and nothing that expressed the idea of subtraction. It was more, more and then just a lot more. Big faux-jeweled cuffs were attached to dresses and gowns on a single sleeve or both. They even managed to get lost in Paris, lassoing in a couple of wildly colored versions of YSL fringe skirted dresses from his Africa collection. Nice homage, but not in Kraft "Vermont"cheddar yellow.

The mood shifted from the antique to the semi modern with crystal pleated lurex chiffon cocktail and evening gowns. They looked like middling quality, poly chiffon, the sort Mary McFadden used with brilliantly tight Marii pleats.(God, I miss Mary. She was the life and death of a party.) This pleating was too large and showed the fabric for what it was; inexpensive, with a lot of beads and twists to camouflage its lack of quality.They've worked this crystal pleating over and over the last few seasons and it's bled into Halston Heritage on SJParker at the Costume Institute Ball and in the sequel of Sex..... It's prom wear at demi-couture prices. Other offerings were restrained and even lovely, like a little one shouldered black jersey dress with one jeweled cuff. The technical know how is in place at the Marchesa studio. It's only channeled towards high voltage looks that have little bearing to real life glamor; only the strain that's epidemic in Hollywood and Cannes.

I remember one night at a screening of a Weinstein film, "The Reader" where he and Georgina were there working the room. I saw her at a distance and could not stop watching her. She wore a metal thread embroidered shrunken matador's cape over a very short beautiful dress. Her legs and body were as sleek as a jaguar. She worked the room(theater) from front to back, side to side like an industry pro. Harvey just stood back like a large toad and let her work. What struck me was not so much their utter lack of chemistry, but her incredible beauty. She was by far the most beautiful woman there, towering over her court and oozing charm. I thought at that moment, "here's a great designer", but too often there are those who are brilliant at making and others at wearing.

That company is a hodgepodge of items, like a Kleinfeld's for "occasion clothes". The Bar Mitzvah mother's go-to outlet or a prom girl or over indulged "sweet 16's" Mecca. The most blatant shortcut was the "Lanvin Pouf", the ubiquitous one-shouldered popover dress that has turned up on way too many runways. When you start to mistake one for the other, it's time to take it from the top.
