Allu Arjun stars as Arya, an orphan who befriends Ajay (Navdeep). The two share a bizarre friendship but soon Ajay is adopted by a rich couple. Eventually the two grow up to be thick friends, although Ajay maintains his distance from Arya. Arya forces Ajay to give him a job in his firm and promises that he would always show exemplary behaviour. Geetha (Kajal) also joins the same company and both Arya and Ajay fall in love with her. The rest of the story is about how both of them try to express their love to Geetha and whom does she choose in the end.This film is rated 3 out of 5.The film redefines the word ‘Style’! Allu Arjun is back with a totally new look and style. The entire story is woven around Arya’s character. Allu Arjun gets into the skin of the character so much that it’s difficult to understand his psyche. In this film ‘Arya’ is quirky, talkative and confused. His dances moves are some of the bestin his career so far and it’s a treat to watch him in all the songs. Allu Arjun’s costumes are going to be a rage in the coming few days. Navdeep is adequate in his role. He plays the role of an insecure guy who’s always suspicious of his friend’s motives. Kajal is pretty good in her role as Geetha. She looks extremely charming in first half, while her role takes a backseat in the second half. Mukesh Rishi, Sayaji Shinde andAjay played other important roles and they are good, especially Ajay-Allu Arjun’s episode is well written. Brahmanandam is hilarious in his role as Dr.Dasavatharam. Shraddha Das is alright in her glamorous role. Sukumar’s latest version of ‘Arya-2’ differs a lot from ‘Arya’; so much that it’s hard to instantly fall in love with this character who behaves sometimes like a psycho and at times totally confused. The film is too long and hence there are too many dialogues especially for Allu Arjun which often tend to beat around the bush. Geetha, in this film is a suave, smart and an extremely confident lady. However, she never becomes a part of any of the conversations between Arya andAjay. The transition of Geetha’s feelings towards Arya could have been portrayed in a better way. Another problem with the film is its flow and narration. Every individual scene is stunningly shot, however the story narration has its share of ups and downs. The climax ofthe film is too melodramatic and it could have been kept short. One reason why the earlier film ‘Arya’ was an instant success was because of its simplicity. Moreover, Arya was a vulnerable guy who just wanted his love to be reciprocated. However, in Arya-2 a lot of things have changed. Now, Arya is not only greedy, but also will sacrifice anything if his friend wants the same. This unconventional behavior rubs on to the audience and in the end it’s difficult to empathize or sympathize with him.The film has its share of brilliance, especially the scenes between Brahmanandam and his team, conversations between Allu Arjun and Navdeep and the entire episode involving Ajay. The film is all about style. ‘Arya-2’ is the kind of film which you will either dazzle you or bore you to death, there’s no middle way. Either way we end up hallucinating under its influence!

The (de)Evolution of Rodarte.

For those who don't know me from the New York Times blog, On The Runway, I'm brooksie and have been posting there for many moons...this is where I met my buddy Fluff Chance whom I encouraged to seriously blog. I'm also Joanshearer on various fashion Livejournals. Fluff, IMHO, is one of the most insightful and blunt voices on the fashion interweb today and since he and I have a very similar vision, I asked him if I could guest blog sometimes. I'm too lazy for my own blog! ;)

I've watched these young women, the Sisters Mulleavy of Rodarte, from the very beginning and I championed them when even Cathy Horyn viewed them with much skepticism. So skeptical was she initially, she refused to attend their shows until mid 07. I believed in their vision and their desire to make American fashion on a more artisinal level than we're used to seeing. America has always had a very small number of artisinal designers such as Ralph Rucci, James Galanos, Pauline Trigere, and Geoffrey Beene, to name a few.

As we all know, they DID get championed by Ms. Anna Wintour from nearly the start of their careers, so they got plenty of media attention and hence developed a following of sorts. However, as time has gone by, they have shown themselves to be "one trick ponies" more often than not. I'm intrigued by the notion that silk scarves sewn on to body stockings STILL seem to hold so much editorial appeal. This look was new and exciting 2-3 years ago, but where's the "juice"...the evolution beyond a student's vision? In fairness to The Sisters, their skill at executing the garments has dramatically increased with each season, but the vision remains quite static. When I initially championed them, I never expected that what I initially liked would keep coming down the runway several years later.

They put me in mind of the then super young Christian Francis Roth who became prominent in the late 80s-mid 90s. Mr. Roth was immediately championed by Vogue (US version) and had tons of editorial endorsement without much experience as a designer for others (apprenticeship) or any in business. He was truly avant garde for the day and his clothes were rightly thought to be new and exciting in look/concept (if not in wear). What separated him from the modern incarnation of the phenomena was that he had quite a number of tricks up his sleeve and his look evolved. The changing times and the economic pitfalls of the mid 90s took him out as a major name, but for those who remember him we dream of what he would be doing now if he'd stuck around. I'm sure he'd NOT be making Crayon dresses today. Actually, now he's making dresses for the contemporary, bridge market... but that's another story altogether.

So how does this relate to Rodarte, you ask? Will we in 5, 10, or 15 years from today see 30 runway looks...all Asia Extreme body stocking dresses w/ ripped leggings? If so, is that what we deserve? Even designers considered most avant garde and true to vision mix things up a bit, if you look at those who emerged from the 70s-90s. They also show that they have an understanding of basic garment construction and an understanding of the human form. Will this be the case for designers emerging in the 00s?

The editors of mainstream fashion mags seem to get stuck in a rut of encouraging young designers to make the same things over and over again, but trying to pass it off as "new" to the public. Some of us have longer memories than this. Where are the real critiques in fashion today and why are they lacking? I can understand it for a financial powerhouse such as Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, and the like....but for emerging designers, how is this useful? Besides, those designers EARNED the right to make the same thing over again, these younger ones need to show that they can make a proper pair of pants at least once. I do not blame this on the young designers as much as the editors that continue to reward creative fossilization.

Rodarte is not the only emerging label that seems to be suffering from this poverty of imagination, but to date they are the most glaring and oft-celebrated example. Someone needs to say that the emperor has no clothes....unless you factor in a bloody body stocking!

Indigo Prints: Resist and Discharged Figures

Julie in Tennessee sent me blocks removed from an old comforter cover. She'd received them from a friend who was a member of the Shields family of Cades Cove, Tennessee. The pattern is one I haven't seen.
The blocks look to be from 1890-1920 when indigo prints were relatively inexpensive and very popular with quiltmakers. They show typical indigo coloring with a dyed blue background and white figures, style dictated by indigo's chemistry. Indigo will not color if it is exposed to oxygen, so simply applying indigo to a wood block or copper plate does not work because the dye binds with the oxygen in the air.

Here's a date-inscribed quilt from an online auction with indigo blue as the ground and white figures in the print. It's a typical early 20th-century factory printed indigo.

Printers traditionally print white figures on indigo grounds in a reserve or resist process (also called batik) by applying wax or a resist paste in a pattern on the fabric and then dipping it in the indigo dye vat. When the paste is removed a white on blue design appears. Another technique developed about 1800 involves dyeing the fabric blue in the indigo vat and then printing a discharge paste to bleach out the figures. The prints in the Cades Cove blocks and Aunt Celia's quilt are probably done in a sophisticated variation of the discharge technique (although the pattern design is rather unsophisticated).
The indigo resist process has been used by artisans all over the world. Pennsylvania historian Trish Herr has been collecting early indigo resist prints from the Germanic people there. These are hand printed rather than factory printed.

And Japanese printers still dye in traditional fashion.

This quilt is called Japanese Coins, made by Georgann Eglinski from Japanese fabrics, 2009.

Printers figured out ways to reverse the figure/ground appearance in indigos. The earliest technique was the labor-intensive process of applying resist paste to the background and leaving the figures to absorb the dye. These indigo resist prints are sometimes called China blue prints because they look like a piece of porcelain.

Akshay Kumar is coming all out for his next project Blue. The movie Blue, will also be starring Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan, and Katrina Kaif. Each of them is shooting fairly strenuously as the project has already been floored.

The movie will be based on the theme of Shipwreck and treasure, thus most of the shooting will take place under water. All the actors have been methodically trained in scuba diving in Bangkok.

Lara Dutta is working out to push through the flab meter. She is reportedly working extremely hard for this venture and will sport a bikini. Now, the last statement must have let the oglers begin to weave a lot of imagination. For all those who remember her sporting a bikini earlier, this will be an all new avatar. Lara has also learnt all the swimming tricks, something that she was hardly acquainted with earlier.

Aarav is the reel name which Akshaye will be keeping in the movie; this is quite a departure from the garish Bacchhan Pande.

Akshay kumar is an attested deep sea diver. His list of injuries continues though. He had been given a shot where he was to be at a depth of 75 feet and was to be infested by 30 sharks. Unfortunately he got stuck with the shipwreck and began to bleed.

A.R. Rehman will be directing the music for the movie
