We decided to hire a cab to bring us here because it was the same price of the boat but with more landscape. Our driver literally flew us here, shaving a full half hour off the 5 hour drive by passing on no passing zones, creating a third lane, honking his way through and using the brakes quite dramatically but effectively.
This city which is the gateway to the temples of Angkor Wat is totally geared towards tourists, but it is more beautiful and charming. We had an amazing tasting menu of Khmer food at a place called La Noria and right now we are sitting at a cafe in the old market area watching the tourists, a lot of horribly maimed natives, I assume because of land mines, and lots of enterprising poor kids that seem to follow the Mexican street kid playbook: martyred faces and whining voices. Method acting for the downtrodden.
The market has knicknacks for tourists, some pretty cool, but it is also a legit food market with wonderful produce. We also saw huge trees filled with big bats. They make a huge racket and when fhey fly, they look like Batman.
