2010 Aishwarya Rai: Treads the Angelina Jolie path

Angelina Jolie and Aishwarya Rai have often been compared for their physical similarities and unearthly beauty. This time, Aishwarya takes another benevolent step reminding me of the H-town’s philanthropic lady Jolie.

Aishwarya has become the ambassador for the Sahachari Foundation, a charitable trust established by 11 Mumbai women that strives to assist NGOs and the needy and down-trodden. This year Sahachari Foundation is giving financial assistance to Victoria Memorial School for the Blind and Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Aishwarya has encouraging words for the initiative as she applauds,

“It is absolutely wonderful the kind of work and effort that these ladies have come together to do in such a subtle yet unconditional and sincere manner.”

Aishwarya took out ample time from her gruelling schedule and spent some quality moments with the children of the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind. In fact, she was in tears when the gratified kids sang to her beauty and good-heartedness.

Ash, as you must be aware, has already donated her emerald eyes. Talking of her philanthropic step towards Sahachari, she cites, “It’s our own little steps to try and make a difference. It doesn’t make all the difference but believe you me one step in itself quantifies as plenty. I have always believed that.”

By her commendable endeavours, she also reminds of her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan who is associated with quite a few social causes. (ENSNN)

2010 Katrina Kaif: Excruciatingly Beautiful in White

August 31, 2010, (Sawf News) - Katrina Kaif made us drool, looking superbly toned in a breezy white shirt dress at a presser for a brand she endorses on Monday, August 30.

Katrina, 26, wore a short sleeve collar dress with black embroidered hem and black elastic belt on the waist.

She accessorized with silver peep toe heels.

Her hair was styled stick straight with an off center parting. She wore light makeup.

Katrina Kaif is currently filming for Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan in Mumbai.

Well, we thought they would have a filmi connect at least. But recently during an interview, Katrina Kaif left us a wee bit baffled. When quizzed on a comment that hottie Imran Khan had made about she being a lucky charm. Batting her eyelids with surprise, she asked, “Who Imran?” Oops. Too many Imrans in Bollywood, eh? So we quickly added the ‘Khan’ to the name. Thankfully, that cleared the confusion for the lovely Katz.

“Oh, Imran! How can I be his lucky charm? I have never worked with him”. Katrina and Imran Khan were supposed to come together for Sanjay Gadhvi’s film ‘Seven Days in Paris’ but the project never took off. However the duo will be paired for the first time in a Yash Raj Production. “We will be doing a film together for Yashraj that we will start shooting soon. We have been offered a few films together, but this one was the best.”

Now we wonder if Katrina’s caustic reply inquiring Imran’s identity has disappointed Imran Khan. He considered her as his lucky mascot. She had to consider again and confirm which Imran.

Katrina Kaif doesn’t know Imran Khan

Katrina Kaif has signed a Yash Raj project with Imran Khan but when the diva was asked about Imran Khan, Kat said, ‘Who Is Imran?’ as if she has heard the name for the first time. Well, if we remember Katrina Kaif walked out of Sanjay Gadhvi’s film ‘7 Days in Paris’ after the constant interference of Imran Khan in the scripting. And so when the actress was questioned about Imran and the project, she gave an odd answer.

Few days back, it was reported that Katrina Kaif has miffed director Abbas Mustan. They have approached her for ‘Italian Job’ but without informing them, they have signed Yash Raj venture opposite Imran Khan.

Abbas Mustan has given Kat hit film ‘Race’ and they are highly disheartened with her refusal. She is more interested to do Yash Raj banner flick as she is always interested to be a part of the Yash Raj banner.

Document and Reproduction: Sparta

Document

The document print for the Sparta fabric in my Arnold's Attic collection dates to about 1880-1900. I called it Sparta after a place name in Arnold's neighborhood.

It's an eye-catching print---little shredded wheat bites and pink commas floating on a carmel-colored grid. So modern looking it's hard to believe it's 1880.

That combination of brown and bright pink was hot in the 1880s.

When I am coloring a whole collection I have to think about the all-over effect, so I decided against the pink. And I changed the colors by greening up the tans and shifting the carmels to red so all the prints would go together as a group.

It's a 4-Block quilt top made with paper-pieced designs in Arnold's Attic prints.

More on Sparta:
After I received the fabric I realized I'd seen that reprint before. Somebody else reproduced it a few years ago. What the heck! It's a great print.

Index of American Design

Beverly Chichester, Doll Quilt, c. 1937

During the Great Depression the federal government funded several projects for artists and about art.

Sylvia De Zon, Patchwork Quilt, c. 1939
Romana Javitz, who administered the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection, and textile designer Ruth Reeves proposed an Index of American Design, a visual survey of American crafts.

The project began in 1935. Over 300 artists rendered objects in great detail. Coverlets, baskets, beadwork, weathervanes and quilts from the Colonial era to 1900 were captured in watercolors.

Marion Curtiss, Quilt, c. 1938

Why paint the objects instead of photographing them? At the time there was no reliable color film, so the only way to truly record the art was in a color painting. Out-of-work commercial artists received training in the complex process of capturing one piece of art in another.

Many of the pieces in the survey were from museums but others were in private collections. The Index rendering is sometimes the only record we have of the piece.

Byron Dingman, Quilt, c. 1941

At a time when American folk arts were often considered second rate, the Index of American Design brought new respect to crafts from many cultures. The publication of the pictures helped define American traditions.

In 1950 many of the paintings were published in a book set The Treasury of American Design by Clarence P. Hornung (expanded in 1972). Other authors, for example, Dolores A. Hinson, published quilt pictures. Hinson also patterned out several of the complex appliqués in her American Graphic Quilt Designs.

They've also been used on notecards and posters over the years.

The National Gallery of Art has a website with pictures of objects in various categories. There are 17 in the textile tour:
