Coordinating fabric collections and books is always difficult because they have such different lead times.

Fabric is often way behind the books, so I can't write a book with my latest fabric line in it. By the time the book is published the fabric may be unavailable.

What to do? What to do?

Eureka!!!

While digitally doodling with the Electric Quilt program after loading pictures of Arnold's Attic prints into my color palette, I realized I could recolor patterns in the books that have recently been published.

My first thought was Edie McGinnis's 2010 book on using precut packages. For A Second Helping of "Desserts" she made quilts with my Civil War Homefront and Morris Workshop collections from last year.

Here is a version of Wild Gooseberry Pie done in Arnold's Attic.

I got the proportions a bit wrong, but you get the idea

Notice I put the same border fabric on both my mockups. I love the "Ohio Autumn" leaf print. Here it is in brown.

Quarter Log Cabin or Half a Log

Chocolate Covered Cherries by Edie McGinnis

When Edie McGinnis was planning her new book A Second Helping of "Desserts": More Sweet Quilts Using Precut Fabrics I showed her a photo of an old log cabin variation I'd been thinking of reproducing. She said she'd like to do it using Moda's Jelly Roll strips from my Civil War Homefront collection. I said "Go for it."

Keeping with her sweet theme she called it Chocolate Covered Cherries. Technically, this old quilt pattern, which seems to date back to the 1880s or so, should be called a quarter of a log cabin but in Gee's Bend, Alabama, the quilters who use it a lot have called it a Half a Log. Another name is Chevrons.

These variations with alternating dark and light logs are deceptively simple looking. The easiest way to get the effect is to do 45 degree seams like Edie did rather than the log construction.

The difficulty in keeping the pattern straight makes Roseanne's version of the old top above even more impressive.

Wild Gooseberry Pie by Edie McGinnis

Edie has a new book---in your quilt shops in a week or two---called A Second Helping of Desserts: More Sweet Quilts Using Precut Fabrics.

It's a follow-up to a book she did last year featuring projects stitched from precuts such as Moda's Jelly Rolls, Turnovers and Layer Cakes. Because Moda's named the squares, triangles and strips for pastries and desserts Edie has a sweet theme going here.

Wild Gooseberry Pie uses the Morris Workshop collection I did for Moda last year with the triangular turnovers pieced into flying geese.
